I have the honour to acknowledge the re-

ceipt of Mr. Chamberlain's Despatch No. 348 of the 22nd. Sep-

tember last and to inform you that New Kowloon was specially

exempted from the operation of the Ordinance in question as

it was considered desirable that rent in that portion of the

New Territory should be recoverable before the Supreme Court

in Hongkong. If it had not been exempted such cases would,

under the Ordinance, have had to go to Taipo to be dealt with

by the New Territory Magistrate.
